FAQ
- Q. What is the best fire extinguisher to purchase for home use?
- A. There are a few different types of fire extinguishers. We suggest that you go to your local hardware store and see extinguishers for home use.
- Q. Where should smoke detectors be placed in my home?
- A. Residential smoke detectors are early warning devices to wake a sleeping person or persons. Smoke detectors should be placed in each bedroom (sleeping area) and in the hallway leading to the bedrooms.
- Q. Why do I always see the firefighters in the grocery store at the same time? Isn't this wasting their time? Why can’t just one go?
- A. Because the firefighters work a 24-hour shift, they eat and sleep at the fire station. The firefighters pay for all of their own food, and sometimes bring food from home. Occasionally they need to go to the store, but they are still on duty. They do not have the freedom to go anywhere alone because they are in constant emergency response mode, and must stay together with their team and their apparatus -- ready to move out at a moment's notice. If you pay close attention, you'll notice that they are carrying emergency pagers and radios. Sometimes they get a call and have to leave their items as they quickly move out toward the emergency.
- Q. When you're not out fighting fires, what do you do?
- A. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift. We eat, sleep and work out of our fire station. We shop for, purchase and cook all our own meals. If something breaks at the station, we fix it. If it needs to be painted, we paint it. All daily maintenance on fire engines is performed at the fire stations. We are involved in educational programs in the schools and to the public. We perform fire inspections at business around town and check every hydrant in Prescott, making sure that they will work when we need it to. We also keep up with up to date training skills to make us better each day.
- Q. Where can I go to get my blood pressure checked?
- A. Any Prescott Fire Station between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
- Q. What is (ACLS) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support and how can this help me?
- A. The Prescott Fire Department currently has twenty-seven (ACLS) Paramedics. This enables us to take the Emergency Room right to the patient. Studies have found that the first ten minutes of an emergency are the most critical. Our Paramedics are trained not only in (BLS) Basic Life Support, but are trained in establishing I.V.s' and administering numerous life saving medications in the field. They can use comprehensive cardiac monitoring including 12 lead, pediatric advanced life support and advanced airway management.
- Q. Does the Fire Department rescue cats from trees?
- A. No. The Fire Department does not respond to these requests. The Prescott Fire Department exists to assist the public in the protection of life and property by minimizing the impact of fire, medical emergencies, and potential disasters. We understand that pets are very important to you. However, to be consistent with the mission of the Prescott Fire Department, we recommend people contact the Humane Society for assistance or in the yellow pages under “Animal Rescue-Relocate & Transport”.
- Q. Who do I contact for a Fire Station or Engine Company tour?
- A. Contact Prescott Fire Department Administration, 777-1700.
- Q. Do firefighters respond to bee swarms?
- A. Yes. Citizens should stay away from the swarm if possible and let bees move on to a different area. In a non-emergency situation call a bee control company in your yellow pages in your phone directory. Or you may contact the PFD dispatch non-emergency number, (928) 445-5357 or 911 in an emergency.
